Walpole - For over 40 years, Bette Duquette has been a fixture in the cafeteria of Norfolk County Agricultural High School and has undoubtedly left the biggest impact on the school throughout that time. As one moved through the cafeteria line, Bette was always at her station greeting staff and students with a smile and even a hug if needed. Her warmth and kindness is infectious. Bette’s gift is that she can make everyone feel loved and valued. She loves “her kids” with all of her heart and the students know it. This is why many years ago, an award was created in her name, to recognize staff and students that exhibit kindness. Awardees are nominated by staff and students. Traditionally, the awards are given on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a time to give thanks and has become known as “Bette Day”. Bette is such a beloved member of the Norfolk Aggie community, that last year Ms. Lauren Frazer, Math Teacher, sent out a petition to name the cafeteria building (and all future cafeteria buildings) after Bette. The proposal was met with incredible enthusiasm. Coincidentally, at the beginning of this year, Bette had decided to hang up her apron and give retirement a try. Bette decided that “Bette Day 2024” would be her last day. And what a day it was. The school community, which included students, staff, Board of Trustee members, former staff and Norfolk Aggie alumni all gathered on November 27, 2024 to celebrate “our Bette”. The day began with an all school assembly to honor this year’s Bette Kindness Award recipients, a farewell video and a presentation of over 500 handwritten notes wishing Bette a wonderful retirement and conveying how much she meant. The morning wrapped up with the dedication of the cafeteria building and the unveiling of her name that will forever be a part of the Norfolk Aggie campus. In true Bette fashion she didn’t miss a lunch service as she was at her station as staff and students made their way, one last time through Bette line.
